NSS 2013
Eeeeek! NSS opens in just a few short hours. I am so excited about the launch of several new products. Our new collections include Letter Writing Kits in six distinct designs, Monogram note cards that are printed on plush double-thick paper and edge painted in mint green, and our Hidden Messages card line (a snarky collection with a blind deboss). Hope to see you there!
We open on Sunday!
The National Stationery Show opens in the morning. We just finished the booth this evening and I really love how it turned out. I won't be able to make it to the show for the opening day (flying back to Rochester for graduation), but Jake will be there and I have a feeling he's going to have a great time. I can't wait to get back and I hope to see a few of you there!
For our printer friends at NSS
If you're a letterpress printer and exhibiting (or visiting) the stationery show, stop by our booth and say hi. We'll have one of these prints waiting for you! The iphone pics don't do the color justice - it's neon orange and it's bright :) Our booth is #1965. We do have a limited supply, so stop by early!
NSS prep
Stationery Show prep has been going well. Aside from being indecisive about next year's calendar (already!), most everything else is turning out great. We ended up cutting the walls we built last year in half and hinging them so that they'd fit in our car. We have one inch of wiggle room, but they are going to fit! We're also repainting them and all of our ancillary display pieces. We have three days before we head to the show. I'm feeling mostly pulled together, but in preparing for trade shows, I know this can change hourly!
This past week I've been fighting off a pretty bad cold. It was some kind of super-cold that knocked me out for a few days. The kind of cold that's more like the flu, but without the fever and chills. The only good thing is that it came before the stationery show. So, no matter how much I may have complained about being sick this past week, I am eternally grateful that I will be in good health for the show.
The stationery show is the largest industry tradeshow for us and I look forward to it every year. Although it's only our third year doing this show I feel like we've been exhibiting much longer (perhaps because we've done so many gift shows, too). Although it seems like it would be very competitive, it honestly doesn't feel like it. I have met so many incredibly talented people and friends through the show. And through their generosity I have learned so much and had so many amazing opportunities.
Jake and I leave on May 17th to set up for the show. Until that time, expect to see us in the shop around the clock. We've got a bunch of printing and packaging to do before the show, not to mention keeping up with wedding orders and proofing. Hope to show you our progress.
A little bit at a time
Well, we're back from the stationery show and it feels great to be home! I thought that this time I'd be able to blog during the show. Yeah right. By the end of the day we'd get dinner and then collapse for the rest of the night. It's completely exhausting talking to people all day, no matter how much fun we're having. And believe me, we had a blast. For now, here are a few shots of the final prep - picking envelope colors, driving to the Javits, and part of the set up. I'll be back soon with a bigger post of the experience.
Best New Product
Hello from NYC! It's been a crazy week and I have barely been able to pick up my computer! I wish I had been able to post more about the stationery show so far, but I'll do a full recap once we get back. For now you can check out my daily coverage of the show on Aesthetic Outburst (Day 1, Day 2). A huge thank you to Grace at Design Sponge for featuring our cross stitch calendar (designed by Abbey). Our other piece of most awesome news is that our Telegram invitation won Best New Product for All Things Wedding! I can't tell you how excited this made us :)
On related note, thank you so much to everyone who stopped by so far - I can't believe that so many of you read this blog. I am totally floored!!
NSS 2011 opens Sunday!
Jake and I have been functioning on very limited sleep these past few weeks as we prep for the stationery show and it opens Sunday! We're in booth no. 1664 and are just about all set up. We have a few more finishing touches to make tomorrow and then it's go time! I'll try to keep you posted. If you're attending the show, we'd love to see you. Stop by and say hi!
Also, we're participating in a recipe card exchange (kind of like a booth scavenger hunt) with 14 other letterpress companies. The exchange was organized by my good friend Amber of Flywheel Press and sponsored by Legion Paper. I LOVE everything about it and I can't wait to pick up the other cards!
ps-I won't be at the show on Sunday, but Jake will be there along with one of my fantastic former interns! I'll be at our University graduation saying goodbye to our senior art majors.

And more wall progress
Yep, we're still working on those walls for the show. They've been patched, primed and painted. Jake and our intern Tracy worked hard to get each panel looking great. Now we just have to figure out how we're displaying everything and do a test run. Hoping to do that next week.
Building walls for NSS
After much deliberation (mostly me internalizing and annoying Jake), we decided to go with hard walls for our booth this time at the Stationery Show. This is a bigger decision that it probably should have been, but since we're doing three shows every year we figured it would be worth it financially and more than worth is aesthetically and functionally. We used paper "walls" for the last two shows which limited how we could arrange our cards and prints.
We picked up sheets of plywood and Jake has been busy assembling everything. We aren't allowed to use power tools at the show, so everything has to be planned out beforehand and bolted together. I'm really looking forward to figuring out shelving and to having a reusable booth. The best part is that we can set it up in the studio and troubleshoot beforehand, I hope!

Countdown to NSS, 4 weeks to go
We have exactly four weeks until we leave for the National Stationery Show. We just ordered four cases of paper and tons of new envelopes. No room for it all in the studio, but we've been printing so much I hope we have enough for the next few weeks.
Wall Update: My friend Sara has agreed to let us borrow her van for the show, which means we're going to have hard walls, providing 4x8' sheets of plywood will fit in! I think we'll probably try to see if we can pick it up this weekend and start making a mock booth in the studio.
Random related info: I still don't have a to-do list for the show, so I guess I should make one! I know I'll forget something if I don't put one together. But I'm also afraid to see everything in one spot.
*We printed these invitations a few weeks ago and I love how they turned out! The blind deboss is so perfect with the rich black ink.

NSS 2011, here we come
Perhaps you remember last year, when we exhibited at the National Stationery Show for the first time. Well, it's almost time to head back to NYC for this year's show! I am so excited about this show. Unlike the gift show, I know a lot of other exhibitors and I'm looking forward to catching up with them and meeting new retail shops! We have been super hard at work (aka, not sleeping) designing and printing a few new lines of cards. I'm planning to update our progress here during the next month.
Show related things I'm thinking about today:
1. Jake had a mohawk last year for the show. He might again this year. Some of our friends have only met him during the show and might not recognize him with hair.
2. I need a haircut. Something cute. But cutting it would mean making a decision and I don't know that I'm capable of that.
3. We somehow managed to print two weddings today. They were both big. Our interns are great.
4.We have four new lines of cards and two calendars in the works. How in the world will we be able to print these in time?
5. Yes, haircuts are show-related.

NSS re-cap
Wow, I can't believe it's been two weeks since I was last here! So much has happened, so I'll try to walk you through everything Stationery Show related. I should warn you now, this is going to be a long post :) After signing up for the show only two months before it began, I didn't have much time to finish everything I had wanted to – mainly my 2011 calendar got pushed to the back burner. But, aside from that I was able to finish printing many new cards and wedding suites, which I'll show you in the next few days.
Jake took the last two weeks off from his job search to help me prepare for the show and it was such immense help! After we packed up the car we started the drive to my mom's house to drop off the dogs. On the road the passenger window came off the track to we had to duct tape it in place until Jake could take the door apart and secure it for the rest of the trip. After that we had to put a finishing coat of paint on the shelves before heading to bed.
Early the next morning we drove the rest of the way to NYC, had a perfect drive with no traffic and were able to unload the car in record time in front of the Javits. I had been worried about dropping everything off and finding parking, but none of that turned out to be a problem at all. After checking in I finally got to meet Amber and Kseniya and we started to set up the booth and build the furniture. Jake assembled most of the furniture while we made decisions about placement. Over the next three days the rest of our booth mates showed up and we all put up lights, hung shelves and cards, installed the floor, and collated 350 giveaway calendars. When the doors finally opened I think the booth looked amazing!
The next few days were a blur of meeting new and old friends, talking to retailers and the press, going to networking parties and eating great meals. I made such amazing friendships with all of the booth-mates, which I hadn't been expecting. I can't tell you how awesome everyone was and how much fun I had on this trip. I also can't believe how supportive all of the other exhibitors were. I felt like I got to meet so many stationers whose work I just adore and they were as sweet as I had been hoping. It was especially fun to meet bloggers and Twitter friends in real life. The fabulous ladies in my booth were: Kseniya of Thomas Printers, Amber of Flywheel Press, Nancy and Beverly from Hazel & Violet Ink, TJ from Ink & Iron, Kelly from May Day Studio, Katrina from Papermill Designs, and Maia from Dandy Lion Press. What a wonderful bunch of printers, who, as Amber said during the trip, are now colleagues!
Aside from having a wonderful experience and eating in many delicious restaurants, I learned so much from the process. I totally feel like I can build my own booth next time and I'm actually thinking about exhibiting at the NY Gift Show in August. I just need to formally commit and send in my application! Thanks so much to all of you for your support and kind words while I was preparing for the show and thanks for sticking through this long post :) I can't wait to show you new work from the line as soon as I finish photographing it and catch up on my email (Not having internet access during the trip was slightly crippling and showed me how much I really do need an iPhone or Droid).

It takes a village!
Man, this trade show thing is a ton of work. This weekend my wonderful friends and studio mates helped me prep for the stationery show. We had a packaging party and accomplished so much! I'm so happy that I finished printing over the weekend and that all of my wedding orders shipped out yesterday. It's a huge weight off my shoulders to know nothing is too pressing when I get back and I don't have to print that weekend. I'm lucky that Jake is going to take next week off from is job search to help me at the show. I don't think I'd be able to make it through this if he wasn't coming with me.
ps - My new wedding album is beautiful and I'm so excited about it. I'll show some pictures when I return since it's all packed up right now!

take out and 3am
So by now you know that I don't have much time to cook at home, although I really love to. This has been a particularly take-out-filled week. What you don't see is the case of Mountain Dew that was recently stocked in the fridge at the studio, which keeps me awake for late nights of printing.
If you are in the Rochester area this weekend, I'm having an open studio event with my studio-mates - we're in studio #4-7. This means that you'll be able to see my studio, which I'll be cleaning tomorrow, and pick up some last-minute mother's day gifts.
